April Walker

Burl | 7″ x 11″ | Ceramic with encaustic | 2019

Artist Statement

The process of creating is spontaneous and intuitive for me. I’m inspired by nature; the night sky, a tree swaying in the wind, or layers of earth speak to me from the depths of nature’s spirit. My work uses ceramic materials and encaustic wax. As my hands form the clay, I feel the heartbeat of nature take shape.Thick and heavy coils are worked into deeply textural organic forms and fired. Many layers of encaustic wax are then applied and torched, adding depth and luminosity to the forms. Using these naturally occurring media creates a seamless language which allows me to express myself.

My work is a homage to nature and the world around me, a celebratory expression of thanks for the beauty and comfort that I have felt.
