Four You | 24″ x 20″ | 2021

Artist Statement

I grew up in Flint, Michigan and the neighborhood where I spent nearly all of my childhood was bulldozed and is since a grassy field. That event was the erasure of an early life of disenfranchisement and resistance to gender norms but still those shaky foundations will always be present in my work. I’ve traveled a good deal and have seen so much art there is a mountain of influence: textiles, beaded work, rock wall paintings and hieroglyphics are particularly important resources for me. Fears that we cannot reconcile ourselves to live equitably together, wield technology responsibly, and treat our planet respectfully inform my compositions.
