Artist Statement

Gordon Price’s lifelong obsession with origami has served a creative journey with painting. The basics of origami involve forming insignificant bits of scrap paper discards (i.e.fliers and newsprint), into objects. The basics of painting has a similar format as origami, portraying an image on a flat surface with paint.

In Gordon’s experience self imposed “rules” of how to prepare a painting surface and construct a composition got in the way. A meaningful process but with meaningless results. Over time, the “rules” went away. The surfaces became newsprint. The painting method became a journal. Less academic, more from the heart. Perhaps “more from the heart” will bolster the message that drives Mighty Real Queer Detroit.
