Artist Statement

Marcus Mannino (January 9, 1952 – December 1, 1989)

Marcus Mannino was a Detroit native artist who studied at the College for Creative Studies, Detroit. His work encompassed drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and notably, fiber art. Initially involved in the then-nascent gay culture and Detroit art scene of the 1970s, Mannino moved to New York City in the 1980 and continued to create original works, all displaying a distinctive homocentric sensibility.

Mighty Real/Queer Detroit is an art exhibition in June 2022 devoted to 77 years (1945-2022) of Detroit LGBTQ+ art 

The exhibition presents a month-long historical examination of the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and its longtime allies, featuring established & emerging Detroit artists, as well as artists whose careers were shortened by HIV/AIDS.
