Artist Statement

S. Kay Young is a Detroit based artist known for her large scale photographs, captured throughout the study of nature. Young’s work is developed through instructions and stories given by Elders while suspended in sleep. Her dreams have been the impetus for her calling as an artist, beginning as a small child. Respect for nature, trees and a surreal mystery are revealed as the viewer visually walks through the images. A familiarity germinates when the abstract becomes concrete. The spine where the images meet, both vertical and horizontal, uncover the spirits of the beings residing in those quiet locations. The phenomenon is created by fractals-the beings in the spines are apparent. The digital files are processed in computer programs, mirrored by the original single image three times or more.
